Sunderland can secure a major financial lift from their final Premier League position, with each place in the table worth about £2.6m over the next three weeks.

They remain on the fringes of European qualification after Saturday’s draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers, and now turn to next weekend’s home game with Manchester United. The Premier League said in a statement that its collective marketing and distribution model supports clubs’ squad building and stadium improvements, adding that in 2024/25 it committed more than £550m to the wider game.

An away trip to Everton follows, then Chelsea visit the Stadium of Light on the final day, with the London club also chasing European football.

Based on the current standings, 12th carries a merit payment of £23.8m for Sunderland, and climbing even a few places could add significantly to their summer budget.

Alongside merit payments, every club also receives equal-share broadcast income, which last season totalled £29.8m domestically and £59.2m internationally.

Whether that late surge also delivers Europa League or Europa Conference League football remains to be seen, but the incentive to keep rising is obvious.
