October’s international break is here and it could be a memorable period for several Premier League players.
A number of uncapped names have been called up to represent their countries this month, perhaps the ultimate honour in the sport.
Here are five Premier League players who could make their international debuts in October.
Senne Lammens is back in the Belgium squad and still awaiting his international debut. After impressing in his homeland at Royal Antwerp, the goalkeeper joined Manchester United in an £18.1m deal on transfer deadline day.
He made his debut for the club against Sunderland last weekend, recording a clean sheet in an assured performance at Old Trafford.
Lammens has a tough task to dislodge Thibaut Courtois with the national side, though there are few better goalkeepers for the 23-year-old to learn from.
Mads Hermansen has been a regular in recent Denmark squads but is yet to appear for the national team.
The presence of Kasper Schmeichel has blocked his path to a debut so far, while Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen provides further competition. Hermansen has endured a shaky start since his summer move to West Ham and will hope the change of scenery can lead to an upturn in fortunes.
A late inclusion for England, Nico O’Reilly has been promoted to the senior squad from u-21 duty. O’Reilly has been given his chance after Reece James withdrew through injury, following a solid start to the campaign at Manchester City.
The versatile 20-year-old has started seven times across all competitions, while he has the positional flexibility to offer Thomas Tuchel an intriguing option. Having featured predominantly at left-back for the Citizens, that may be the role to target and one that looks open as the World Cup looms.
Jean-Philippe Mateta is one of football’s great modern examples of perseverance. Mateta began his career in France’s third tier, was a Ligue 1 player as recently as 2018, and scored just eight league goals during his first two-and-a-half seasons at Crystal Palace.
The 2023/24 campaign was a breakout for Mateta, who netted 16 times in the Premier League, before recording a further 14 in league action last season. Now, aged 28, he’s been called up to the France squad for October’s games with Azerbaijan and Iceland.
The absences of Marcus Thuram, Randal Kolo Muani and Ousmane Dembele have handed Mateta a chance to impress among Les Bleus’ star-studded squad.
The third goalkeeper to feature on this list, Robin Roefs is in the Netherlands squad after a superb start at Sunderland.
The Black Cats took a chance on the young goalkeeper in the summer after just one season of Eredivisie experience, but Roefs has been a major part of the club’s strong start since Premier League promotion.
Bart Verbruggen and Mark Flekken are more experienced at this level, but the 22-year-old is ready to challenge for a place.
