Our Premier League Team of the Week following the latest action, as Liverpool thrash Manchester United and Erling Haaland helps himself to another hat-trick.

Premier League Team of the Week – Matchday 3

Goalkeeper: Dean Henderson – Crystal Palace

A whopping 1.8 xG prevented as Crystal Palace held Chelsea to a draw at Stamford Bridge. Henderson might have been disappointed with Nicolas Jackson’s opener but made a string of saves to keep Palace in the game. One of his best performances for the Eagles.

Right-back: Rico Lewis – Manchester City

Rico Lewis continues to excel in Pep Guardiola’s side. At full-back, midfield, or anywhere, Lewis has performed for the Citizens and was again a standout at West Ham. He led the game for tackles (4), and clearances (5) and won 100% of his ground duels (6/6) at the London Stadium.

Centre-back: Jan Paul van Hecke – Brighton

Consistent, commanding, and getting better. Jan Paul van Hecke was central to Brighton’s hard-fought draw at Arsenal and made several vital defensive interceptions under pressure. A perfectly-timed tackle on Kai Havertz was a highlight for the Dutchman, who completed 95.6% of his passes and 8/8 long balls.

Centre-back: Ibrahima Konate – Liverpool

After starting the season out of favour, Ibrahima Konate has returned to the Liverpool team with a point to prove. The Frenchman brought pace, power and won 6/7 defensive duels in a flawless performance at Manchester United. The shirt is his to lose.

Left-back: Leif Davis – Ipswich Town

It’s been a tough start to the season for Leif Davis. One of the Championship’s leading lights last season, his welcome to the Premier League has seen difficult tests in Mohamed Salah and Savinho. Against Fulham this week, Davis responded with 10 ball recoveries, three chances created and an assist – adding to the 18 league assists he got in 2023/24.

Midfield: Amadou Onana – Aston Villa

At the hub of Aston Villa’s win at Leicester, the Belgian’s strong start to the season continued. He arrived to convert a well-worked set piece for his second Premier League goal of the campaign and bossed the midfield battle at the King Power Stadium. Villa will hope his early substitution is not a long-term concern.

Midfield: Ryan Gravenberch – Liverpool

He continues to flourish as Liverpool’s deepest midfielder. After impressing against Ipswich and Brentford, Gravenberch dominated a big fixture with an important role in the Reds’ win at Manchester United. He led the game for interceptions and fouls won, won seven duels and regained possession on six occasions.

Right-wing: Mohamed Salah – Liverpool

Salah just loves playing against Manchester United. The Egyptian continued his remarkable record against the Red Devils with two assists and a goal, twice setting up Luis Diaz before sealing Liverpool’s 3-0 win with the third. He suggested this might be his final season at Anfield at full-time. The Reds will hope that is not the case.

Left-wing Luis Diaz – Liverpool

Luis Diaz’s electric start to the season continued as the Colombian scored twice in Liverpool’s 3-0 win at Manchester United. Diaz has attracted some unfair criticism in recent months but responded with a match-winning performance at Old Trafford. Despite significant competition for a place in Arne Slot’s team, he is undroppable right now.

Forward: Bryan Mbeumo – Brentford

Ivan Toney who? Some have said Bryan Mbeumo is better in the absence of the Saudi-bound forward and the Frenchman’s performance this weekend suggest so. Mbeumo scored twice as Brentford eased to a 3-1 win over Southampton, caressing two finishes past Aaron Ramsdale. The 25-year-old is a real threat and continues to show a level that makes him one of the Premier League’s most effective widemen.

Forward: Erling Haaland – Manchester City

Relentless and ruthless. A second successive Premier League hat-trick for Erling Haaland and seventh goal in three league games this season. The Manchester City forward is unstoppable, with just three players in Premier League history having scored more than his eight hat-tricks.
