North End are pursuing returns for Alan Browne and Cameron Archer

Preston North End are reportedly pushing to complete a double transfer raid for former players Alan Browne and Cameron Archer before the summer window closes.

According to Alan Nixon, North End are making a final push for the Sunderland midfielder and Southampton forward, with negotiations having taken place over both players in recent days.

Paul Heckingbottom's side have endured a miserable opening to the Championship campaign, losing all three of their league matches and sitting 23rd in the table.

The Preston boss has made no secret of his desire to strengthen before the deadline, with a striker particularly high on his list of priorities.

Nixon reports that Preston are now concentrating their remaining resources on bringing in Browne and Archer.

Browne could potentially be allowed to leave Sunderland as the Premier League club reassesses its stance on the 31-year-old, although his wages could present a significant obstacle.

The midfielder may also be looking for a three-year contract, which would add another complication to any potential return to Deepdale.

Regis Le Bris has already issued an update on Browne that will be reassuring for North End supporters.

Archer, meanwhile, would also be an expensive deal for Preston. The Southampton forward is understood to be among the club's higher earners, meaning even a loan agreement would come at considerable cost.

Nevertheless, the prospect of bringing back two players who are already familiar with Preston and the Championship could be particularly attractive as Heckingbottom attempts to reshape his squad.

Archer has already enjoyed a productive spell at Preston, joining on loan from Aston Villa in January 2022.

The 24-year-old subsequently established himself as a proven Championship goalscorer, with spells at Middlesbrough and Sheffield United before his move to Southampton.

Browne, meanwhile, spent more than a decade with Preston after joining the club in 2014. He made more than 400 appearances for North End and captained the club before leaving for Sunderland in 2024.

A return would therefore give Heckingbottom a midfielder who understands the club and the demands of the division, although Browne's wage demands and desired contract length could prove decisive.

For Archer, the financial challenge is greater, but Preston's need for a forward capable of providing greater attacking threat is clear.

Preston's recruitment push has taken on greater urgency after Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Charlton Athletic left them without a point from their opening three league fixtures, a situation that has already been described as “bleak.”

Karlan Grant's second-half goal condemned North End to another defeat, despite Heckingbottom feeling his side had controlled large portions of the match.

"We haven't got that killer instinct at the top end of the pitch at the minute," the Preston boss admitted after the game.

That has been the recurring problem. North End have scored just twice in their first three Championship matches, while Milutin Osmajic's departure for Genoa has further weakened their attacking options.
