PREVIEW: Bristol City hope for first win as they host Portsmouth | OneFootball

Bristol City will welcome Portsmouth to Ashton Gate tomorrow afternoon, as they continue to search for their first league win of the season.

The Robins have played twice so far, losing 2-0 at home to Millwall on opening day after Adam Randell’s first-half dismissal, then drawing 2-2 away at Birmingham City last time out, where Summer signing Dom Ballard netted a potential Puskás Award-winning goal late in the day.

Meanwhile, Portsmouth also lost their opener, 3-1 at home to QPR, before heading to newly promoted side Lincoln City, where they picked up a 3-1 win of their own thanks to goals from Ryan Kavuma-McQueen, Adrian Segecic and Ebou Adams.

This is Poompey’s third consecutive season in the Championship following their 2024 promotion, with John Mousinho continuing to steady the ship in the second tier despite limited resources until this Summer. The South Coast side finished 16th in their first season back at this level, and then 18th last season, avoiding the drop relatively comfortably both times.

Bristol City, meanwhile, has seen plenty of change since these sides last met on New Year’s Day of this year. Gerhard Struber was in the dugout that day, and he has since been replaced by Michael Skubala after an interim period where former England boss Roy Hodgson took charge of the club. There has been a high turnover in players over the last eight months too, with only five of the Robins’ starting XI from that day still at the club.

There have been 58 previous meetings between the two, with Pompey picking up 15 wins, 18 ending in a draw and Bristol City winning 25. Portsmouth have also failed to win on their last five competitive trips to Ashton Gate, amassing an aggregate score of Bristol City 12-2 Portsmouth across those matches.

Kick-off is scheduled for 3pm BST on Saturday August 29th.
