PREVIEW: Denmark host Wales in Nations League A clash | OneFootball

Despite both sides facing narrow defeats in their opening Nations League games, Craig Bellamy’s Wales travel to Copenhagen to take on Brian Riemer’s Danish side in hope of victory.

Both Wales and Denmark failed to qualify for the World Cup in America, as they both suffered heartbreaking penalty shootout defeats in the playoffs, enhancing the significance of the Nations League for both countries.

However, the hosts played their part in a 5-goal thriller which, unfortunately for them, resulted in a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Erling Haaland and Norway. Meanwhile, the ‘Red Wall’ of Wales were defeated by a goal to nil in Lisbon against a strong Portuguese side captained by Cristiano Ronaldo.

During the 2024 edition of the Nations League, Denmark had a relatively impressive campaign, reaching the knockout stages only to be eliminated by the eventual winners, Portugal. On their way to the latter stages of the competition, Denmark finished runners-up in their group behind Spain, but comfortably ahead of Switzerland and marginally ahead of Serbia.

Unlike the ‘Danes’, Wales’ last Nations League tournament saw them compete in the B division, with the competition marking the start of Bellamy’s reign at the helm. Bellamy guided his Welsh side to an automatic promotion into the top division, topping their respective group undefeated, but only a single point ahead of runners-up, Turkiye.

Wales travel to Denmark with aspirations to bring their somewhat poor run of form to an end, as the ‘Red Dragons’ are now 5 games without tasting victory, dating back to November 2025 when they hammered North Macedonia 7-1 at the Cardiff City Stadium. Since that comprehensive victory in the capital, the Welsh national team have been defeated by Portugal, Bosnia and Romania, while picking up draws against Northern Ireland and Ghana in friendlies.

Similarly, Riemer’s Danish side have also been struggling for form as they have only won one game in their last five, which came at home against North Macedonia whilst drawing against the Czech Republic and DR Congo, with defeats coming against Norway and Scotland away from home.

Both teams exited their opening day defeats unscathed in terms of injuries and suspensions, meaning Riemer and Bellamy will have their fully selected 26-man squad to choose from prior to the clash in the Danish capital.

Wales have taken on Denmark three times in recent history, and it has been the latter who have come out on top in each encounter, winning 2-1 and 2-0 in the 2018 Nations League, before thrashing Wales 4-0 at Euro 2020 en route to reaching the semi-finals.

In what is set out to be a thrilling fixture between the two nations, both sets of managers, players and supporters will be hoping that their side can achieve their maiden three points of the campaign.

The match is scheduled to kick off on Sunday 27th September at 5:00 PM BST, and will be broadcast live on BBC One Wales, S4C and BBC iPlayer.
