The Ministério Público do Rio Grande do Sul has filed a criminal complaint against Grêmio’s women’s football executive, Bárbara Fonseca, for injúria racial against an Internacional supporter after the Gre-Nal on 28 March, in the fifth round of the Brasileirão Feminino.

According to Globo.com, Grêmio are following the case and providing legal support, while Fonseca maintains she is confident in her version of events and believes the allegation is unfounded.

The incident allegedly occurred by the pitch exit at Sesc Protásio Alves after Grêmio’s 2-1 win, with the supporter reporting that racist insults were directed at him.

The DPCI, the intolerance crimes unit, heard 11 people during the investigation, including the complainant and the accused. Three witnesses corroborated the existence of racial insults. Security cameras were reviewed but did not capture the moment.

The Civil Police forwarded the inquiry in April and later indicted Fonseca. After that, the club’s legal department was monitoring developments and reiterated its belief that no racial offence occurred.

In April, she was also reported in the sporting arena but was acquitted by the Superior Tribunal de Justiça Desportiva. With the MPRS complaint now filed, the case moves to the judiciary for analysis and any legal measures. The offence of injúria racial falls under Article 2-A of Law 7.716/89, carrying a prison term of two to five years and a fine.
