Paris Saint-Germain’s Ferran Torres (26) has been forced to withdraw from the Spain squad, the Spanish Football Federation has announced. Real Madrid and Spain Under-21 international Carlos Espí (21) has been called up by Luis de la Fuente to replace him.
Having sustained an injury to his left ankle, the striker was initially able to train and play (55 minutes against England), before persistent symptoms forced him to step aside to prioritise his recovery.
“The Spanish Football Federation’s medical staff have been in constant contact with his club’s medical team since the start of the training camp, and the entire process has been monitored jointly,” explains the statement.
Having moved to PSG from FC Barcelona for a fee of nearly €50m this summer, Torres has enjoyed an idyllic start in the colours of the reigning double European champions.
Scoring a crucial brace against Stade Rennais on his very first appearance for his new team, the Foios-born player also made a lasting impression with important goals against Stade Brestois and Olympique de Marseille, as well as a hat-trick against Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League.
