PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov (26) is set for an extended spell on the sidelines after fracturing his left hand, according to a medical release published by PSG. The Russian goalkeeper has reportedly sustained this serious injury during the Intercontinental Cup shoot-out against Flamengo, during which he saved four out of Flamengo’s five attempts.

Safonov is expected to miss at least a whole month of action, which means that France international Lucas Chevalier will return between the PSG sticks. According to Luis Enrique, even PSG’s teammates did not know of Safonov’s injury. “I can’t explain it, it’s unbelievable“, the Spaniard said this Friday for his press conference.

Luis Enrique believes that Safonov injured himself in stopping Flamengo’s third penalty. “Despite the fracture, he managed to save the last two shots. The adrenaline was so strong that he didn’t feel any pain. Being ready to help the team, being ready no matter what, that’s the mentality we want.”
