PSG manager Luis Enrique has never been tied to a traditional center forward, rotating different players into the No. 9 spot whenever it suited his plans. Ousmane Dembélé even spent time there last season as PSG completed the treble and secured the first UEFA Champions League title in club history.

Gonçalo Ramos can play through the middle, but his role has often come from the bench. That leaves Enrique free to consider a striker who matches the tempo and ideas he wants in the long term.

In 2024, PSG evaluated several options for that role. One of the targets they followed was Julián Álvarez, who eventually chose Atlético de Madrid.

Recently, The Chelsea Chronicle reported that Álvarez is considering leaving Atlético Madrid, with Barcelona reportedly being the leading option. Meanwhile, Chelsea and PSG remain closely monitoring the situation.

However, RMC Sport’s Fabrice Hawkins is refuting the Parisians’ interest in the Argentine despite having shown interest in him in the past.

“I’ve never heard of Julián Alvarez as a credible target for Paris Saint-Germain,” Hawkins said. “He’s not a short-term target.”

In a recent interview with France Football, the Argentine was asked about the chance of joining PSG or Barcelona down the line.

“Do I plan to play for PSG or Barcelona in the coming years? Honestly, I don’t know,” Álvarez said. “I see what’s being said on social media… In Spain, there’s a lot of talk about me and Barcelona. When I signed with Atlético last year, there was also a lot of talk about Paris.

“It’s true, there were discussions between PSG officials and my agent—they showed interest in signing me—but it didn’t happen. For now, I’m focused on Atlético. We’ll take stock at the end of the season.”
