Paris Saint Germain, the first French club to play 300 European matches, lose to Sporting CP on matchday 7 of the UEFA Champions League.
This is PSG’s second defeat in the competition this season. The European champions lost 2-1. Luis Suárez scored twice (74′, 90′), with the former Olympique de Marseille player proving to be the hero of the match.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who came on as a substitute at the start of the match, gave PSG hope by equalising with a magnificent strike (79′), but Paris, looking more crumbly than last season, lost in the dying moments of the game. In the Champions League, PSG have yet to win in Portugal (3 defeats in 5 matches).
In an unexpected turn of events, unimaginable after the first half, with 15 shots, including 4 on target, and 78% possession at half-time, Paris took control at the end of the match.
PSG dominated but failed to convert their chances, lacking the spark needed to be more effective in front of goal. A little doubt crept into the minds of the PSG players.
There were shortcomings, particularly in defence, with Lucas Chevalier not entirely blameless for the second Portuguese goal. This is not the first time the goalkeeper has made mistakes, and Chevalier has conceded far too many goals in the Champions League (10 in 6 matches). This is another major warning for PSG ahead of the most important fixtures, which are fast approaching in the Champions League.
A win in their last four Champions League matches means that PSG could be out of the top 8 after matchday 7. Finishing in the top 8 would allow them to avoid the play-offs and qualify directly for the round of 16.
The race for the top 2 now seems out of reach. The two lucky teams (Arsenal and another club) will have a huge advantage: they will play all their return matches at home until the final in Budapest on 30 May. Luis Enrique, his staff, and all PSG players really need to be aware of the situation, or they could face huge disappointment in the coming weeks.
