PSG and Arsenal, two youthful sides with contrasting identities and forceful Spanish managers, meet in Budapest on 30 May, a final that frames an emerging rivalry without fireworks or needle.
According to L'Équipe, while PSG’s European enmities have long centred on Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern and even Chelsea after the Club World Cup final, these two clubs now look set to trouble that old order given their aligned trajectories and similar age profiles.
This Champions League final will be their fourth meeting since the start of last season, following a group-stage defeat for PSG at the Emirates in October 2024, 0-2, when Luis Enrique omitted Ousmane Dembélé, and a spring 2025 semi-final that finished 1-0 and 2-1.
Both coaches are shaped by Barcelona, Mikel Arteta from his time in the B team when Luis Enrique was still a player, yet they only partly follow that inheritance, overlaying their own ideas. The stylistic contrast is real, but it is too neat to reduce Arsenal to defensive resilience and set plays, and PSG to perpetual attacking flourish.
Each can shift gears. Arsenal have regained some fluency with Bukayo Saka back and Martin Ödegaard’s introduction against Atlético on Tuesday, 1-0, improving their control. PSG edged Bayern through suffering and transition, yielding the ball, 43-57% then 35-65%, while showcasing their forwards’ quality.
Approach still depends on the opponent. The final reads as total football versus beauty in bursts, with Arsenal’s identity more defensive and Viktor Gyökeres reshaping their attacking routes.
They share a long hunt for this trophy. PSG were first-time winners a year ago, Arsenal could follow in Budapest, both powered by collective strength without an absolute superstar and by head coaches who dominate the stage. Domestically, PSG likely need one win to seal Ligue 1, while Arsenal face a fraught Premier League run-in.
