The new season raises its curtain with a customary clash of European champions as Paris Saint-Germain take on Aston Villa in the Super Cup.

Champions League winners PSG are the holders of the title after beating Tottenham on penalties last year, and they’ll get another shot at the crown after breaking the hearts of Spurs’ north London rivals Arsenal in the same manner in Budapest.

Villa will hope to end the Parisians’ dominance of English teams when silverware is on the line, earning their place in this showpiece occasion after cruising to the Europa League title in their 3-0 final win against Freiburg.

The match-up offers a couple of notable reunions with Villa boss Unai Emery facing the club he won a Ligue 1 title win in 2017/18 - while Lucas Digne will also line-up against the Villans after rejoining PSG just last weekend.

With this game coming during pre-season neither team is expected to be up to full fitness but they will give their all to win the Super Cup.

Unai Emery explained: “Of course, we are not going to be on the pitch in our best moment, but as well, for PSG, because I played three times, the Super Cup, and more or less, all the matches we played starting the Super Cup in August were similar. And we are going to compete.

“We are preparing this game with the players we started, even some young players, four weeks ago, and tomorrow, I expect to compete, and to try to face them with our capacity, and our possibilities, as well, to beat them. Of course they are favourites.”

“We’ll have our challenges, there’s a lot of change, but when you look at other clubs around England, there’s a lot of change there as well – a lot of coaches changing, a lot of players changing,” McGinn added.

“But what we still have is a main core – same manager, same methods, same desire to achieve more.

“A lot of people thought we had reached our ceiling a couple of seasons ago and we proved them wrong.

“We’ve still got the same hunger and desire to go and achieve more and as long as we’ve got the hunger and desire to do that, Aston Villa fans can expect as much as possible.”

“Similar to where it’s been in the past few seasons,” he said.

“I think we’ve consistency competed with the best in England, I think we’ve consistently competed with the best in Europe no matter what the competition is.”

Aston Villa are in flux again but Super Cup offers rare opportunity

When Aston Villa tasted glory in Istanbul in May, it was described as their first European silverware for 44 years. Which was true in a sense, and certainly their first major continental trophy since the 1982 European Cup. But not in another: the 1982 Super Cup was not played until January 1983. Tony Barton’s side showed their capacity for upsetting the continental aristocracy was not confined to Bayern Munich by sweeping Barcelona aside 3-0 at Villa Park.

But, even though it came eight months after they beat Bayern, there was a continuity. Nine of the starters in the first leg had begun the European Cup final. Villa’s second Super Cup final, however, will come with distinct differences from the game that secured their participation in it.
