PSP has distanced itself from Benfica’s planned fan zone for Sunday’s behind-closed-doors Liga Portugal Betclic opener with Académico de Viseu, clarifying its role around Estádio da Luz.

The force said in a statement that the fan zone outside the ground is entirely the club’s responsibility, adding that officers will police the fixture, keep public order and protect participants while enforcing the stadium closure.

Lisbon’s metropolitan command has the 3rd Police Division working with Benfica’s security department to ensure legal compliance and a smooth event, and has appealed for civility.

A fan zone with giant screens and catering is planned outside the stadium so supporters can follow the match, with a welcome by the Eusébio statue also envisaged.

The game remains set for Sunday at 20:30, with the stands shut and a special operation arranged outside Estádio da Luz.
