Christian Pulisic has been diagnosed with a microfracture and bone bruise of the tibia/fibula in his right leg suffered during the USA's 4-1 Round of 16 loss to Belgium, ending a World Cup campaign that was already compromised by persistent injury issues.
The injury occurred seven minutes into the second half when Pulisic attempted a shot but struck Belgium midfielder Youri Tielemans' leg. He tried to continue for several minutes before being substituted in the 59th minute, shortly before Belgium extended their lead through a goalkeeper error.
The fracture represents the culmination of a tournament defined by Pulisic's fitness struggles. The winger had already been substituted at halftime of the USA's opening victory over Paraguay with a calf injury and subsequently missed the match against Australia. He played only 196 of the team's 450 total minutes across five matches.
This physical fragility exposed a structural problem in Mauricio Pochettino's squad construction. Without Pulisic operating at full capacity, the USA lacked the individual quality to break down organized European opposition. The gap between an elite European side — even a Belgian one past its prime — and the U.S. was profound.
Pochettino's system relied heavily on Pulisic's ability to create in transition and provide width in the final third. When the AC Milan winger was absent or limited, the team's attacking structure became predictable. The Belgium match demonstrated this dependency starkly — the USA managed just one goal from a Malik Tillman free kick while conceding four.
The injury pattern raises questions about load management and squad rotation during the tournament. Despite clear fitness concerns after the Paraguay match, Pulisic was rushed back for partial minutes against Turkey before starting the Bosnia and Herzegovina match. This approach prioritized immediate results over player preservation.
Pulisic is expected to miss four to six weeks, pointing to a return to training with AC Milan at some point in August. AC Milan opens their Serie A season on August 23 against Torino, giving Pulisic a narrow window to regain match fitness under new management.
For the USMNT, the injury crystallizes a broader issue heading toward the 2028 Olympics and 2030 World Cup cycle. The program's reliance on a single creative outlet proved unsustainable when that player faced the physical demands of a compressed tournament schedule. Building depth behind Pulisic — not just in personnel but in tactical flexibility — becomes the immediate priority for Pochettino's rebuild.
The microfracture diagnosis confirms what the Belgium performance already suggested: when Pulisic's availability is compromised, the USA lacks the technical profile to compete with top-tier opposition. That structural weakness, more than any individual error, defined their World Cup exit.
