Palmeiras unveiled an Italy-inspired third kit on Friday, only for a row to erupt over an acute accent added to the Italian word "Vittoria" on the back, a term that is not accented in Italian.
Puma rejects any error, describing the accent as a typographic device to emphasise the stressed syllable and aid readability. The company gave the same explanation to the club.
The word appears twice on the shirt, once on a patch in standard Italian without an accent, and again as the main sign-off on the rear with the accent. The approach is presented as inspired by practices in reference Italian dictionaries, such as Treccani, that mark stress with a graphic accent.
The accented word features within "Scoppia che la vittoria è nostra", printed across the back, one of the club’s early stadium chants that translates as "Explode, the victory is ours".
The new strip was due to be worn on Sunday against Vasco, but Palmeiras were informed on Friday they cannot use it because of technical issues linked to semi-automatic offside technology.
Its debut is now expected in the Copa do Brasil clássico against Santos on Wednesday, 26 August, when the club will celebrate 112 years.
