Portsmouth have got off to a decent start to their 2025/26 Championship campaign by currently sitting in 14th place with twelve points on the board.

After securing Championship safety in their first season back in the second tier last season since 2012, avoiding the drop by five points, Pompey look to progress up the table and really cement themselves in the division for years to come.

Recruitment for the Hampshire side has been solid over the summer by bringing in the likes of Conor Chaplin John Swift, Josh Knight, and, at least off the early evidence, none more impressive than the young Spurs loanee Yang Min-Hyeok.

The 19-year-old South Korean has hit an early patch of form for his new side after completing a loan deal from Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur. Never fall in love with a loan player, as the saying goes, but if he is to keep up his form, Pompey fans may find it hard not to.

After signing on a one-year loan deal in the summer, the South Korean winger quickly won over the hearts of the Portsmouth fans by introducing himself to Fratton Park with back-to-back goals against Watford and Middlesbrough.

The 19-year-old spent last season on loan with fellow Championship rivals QPR, featuring 14 times in the league where he scored two goals and provided one assist.

During his time with the Hoops, fans saw glimpses of his raw ability and desire to beat his man in 1v1 situations. However, in terms of goal contributions, they were few and far between for the youngster. Fast-forward to this season, and with only four games played for Portsmouth, he has already equalled that tally, stepping up to deliver in the absence of star winger Josh Murphy.

Yang has become a regular starter for John Mousinho in recent weeks, and it has been a decision that has certainly been paying off. He fired his team into the lead with the opening goal in Pompey's eventual 2-2 draw at home to Watford at the beginning of the month, followed by a 23rd minute strike against Middlesbrough which turned out to be the winner in their 1-0 victory over the league high-flyers.

The South Korean's goal brought an end to Boro's eight-game unbeaten streak in the Championship that has instantly made him a fan-favourite.

QPR will be jealous of Yang Min-Hyoek's Portsmouth form

After spending the second half of last season on loan at QPR, it was Hyoek's first introduction to the EFL and English football as a whole. He signed for Spurs at the start of the year from Gangwon in his native homeland and was instantly sent out on loan to gain experience of new surroundings and the pace of the English game.

Yang impressed for Gangwon in 2024 as he produced 18 goals and assists in 38 league games, which caught the attention of clubs across Europe, but none more than Spurs, who the youngster opted for due to their widespread audience across his nation.

He is certainly one to look out for in the future, merely being a teenager, but as for the here and now, if Yang is to continue his outstanding form for Portsmouth that we have seen in recent weeks, then they have a real gem on their hands that could take the Championship by storm.

One would suspect that QPR may just have a tinge of envy watching on at what he's doing at Fratton Park, as the wide-man perhaps failed to deliver on expectation during his stint in West London. However, it's natural for players to endure inconsistent first loan moves - and Portsmouth are now reaping the rewards.
