Queens Park Rangers and Portsmouth are eyeing a move for a Liverpool defender ahead of the transfer deadline...
Queens Park Rangers and Portsmouth met on the opening day of the season, but both clubs are eyeing the same target from Liverpool in the form of Luke Chambers.
Portsmouth hosted Queens Park Rangers at Fratton Park and took the lead through Terry Devlin but Ilias Chair's brace and assist for Koki Saito saw the away side turn the game around before a goalless second half.
With the transfer window closing in two weeks, a number of Championship clubs will be eyeing reinforcements before the deadline. Pompey have made nine signings thus far, while QPR have added six new faces to John Mousinho's ranks.

Luke Chambers joined Liverpool's academy at the age of six and broke through into the first-team in 2023/24, making four appearances for the club. However, the left-back has played most of his senior football away from Anfield on loan.
QPR signed a left-back this week in Dennis Cirkin, while Ziyad Larkeche and Boy Kemper are other options as left-sided full-backs. The 20-year-old Esquerdinha has also featured at left-back occasionally.
Meanwhile, Portsmouth have just Connor Ogilvie and Jacob Farrell at left-back, which perhaps explains why there is reported interest in Chambers. The Athletic report Luke Chambers, James McConnell, Kieran Morrison, and Calvin Ramsay are all likely to leave on loan.
QPR and Portsmouth are the sides reported to be keen on Chambers, whilst earlier in the month, it was reported by Alan Nixon that Blackburn Rovers were also looking into a move for the versatile defender.
Rovers and the Reds have had a good relationship when it comes to loanees, with Harvey Elliott, Owen Beck and Tyler Morton all gaining experience at Ewood Park, but Blackburn face stiff competition for Chambers' services.

Chambers has taken a gradual route towards regular senior football with Liverpool, gaining valuable experience through loans at Kilmarnock, Wigan Athletic, and Charlton Athletic.
His Kilmarnock spell in 2023 gave him his first sustained taste of senior football, before two separate periods at Wigan allowed him to establish himself in League One. He then stepped up to the Championship with Charlton in January 2026, joining for the remainder of the season.
Given that progression, a full Championship season now arguably makes more sense than another half-season or shorter spell. At 22, Chambers needs continuity and regular starts, and a full campaign at that level could accelerate his development significantly over the course of the next year.

QPR could be an appealing destination for Chambers because he already has Championship experience and would join a club where he could compete for an important role in a side expected to improve this term under Julien Stephan.
However, the competition at left-back is a concern. QPR have signed Cirkin, who should be among the division's best in that position when fully fit, while Chambers would also need to contend with other options.
Portsmouth could therefore be the more logical move if they can offer Chambers clearer guarantees of regular football. At 22, another season spent primarily competing for minutes would not be ideal. A full Championship campaign with Portsmouth, where he can establish himself as a first-choice player, could be far more valuable to his development than joining QPR.
Blackburn as well probably need a left-back more than QPR too. Harry Pickering has been in and out of the first-team in his years at the club, and Chambers would be seen as a potential upgrade on him and Yuri Ribeiro.
Whatever happens regarding a move for Chambers, he does not want to be playing second fiddle or find himself back on the bench too frequently. If anything, a permanent move to a second tier side is now his best bet if he is to develop further.
