Cardiff City are keen on signing Nathan Trott permanently, which should help QPR or Rangers sign Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Pierce Charles.

Julien Stephan's QPR have rotated between Joe Walsh, Paul Nardi, and Ben Hamer this term, which has contributed to their overall inconsistency in the Championship.

Meanwhile, Cardiff have successfully clinched promotion back to the second tier from League One, but first-choice goalkeeper Nathan Trott is still only on loan from Copenhagen.

North of the border, Danny Rohl is set to oversee his first summer transfer window as Rangers boss, and is intent on strengthening his options between the sticks.

Trott has been an outstanding performer for Cardiff in League One this term, helping them land an automatic promotion spot alongside champions Lincoln City.

The 27-year-old also helped the Bluebirds reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, where they were ultimately knocked out by Premier League outfit Chelsea, despite a valiant display.

As reported by Wales Online, Cardiff are increasingly hopeful of signing Trott permanently, while they have a £1.5million option to buy him from Danish side Copenhagen.

Bluebirds boss Brian Barry-Murphy is set for an important summer transfer window, as he vies to ready his squad for a Championship return.

Meanwhile, as exclusively revealed by Football League World, QPR and Cardiff are both keen on Sheffield Wednesday's Pierce Charles alongside interest from Rangers and a host of top-flight sides.

However, if the Welsh capital club pursue their deal for Trott, it will open the door for either Stephan's men or Rohl's side to land their move for Charles.

Wednesday have next to no chance of retaining one of the Championship's brightest young talents, thanks to their relegation to League One amid administration.

The Owls have endured a woeful second-tier season, but Charles has been a shining light for them, and recently kept a clean sheet against champions Coventry City.

Danny Rohl factor could give Rangers an advantage over QPR in Pierce Charles transfer race

As previously mentioned, if Cardiff sign Trott, whose League One performances prove that the man on loan from Copenhagen can produce the goods in the Championship, Barry-Murphy's side will cool their interest in Charles.

The 20-year-old would then be left to decide whether to join QPR or Rangers, and there are pros and cons regarding making a transfer to either the West London club or the Glasgow outfit.

A move to Stephan's side would enable Charles to stay in the Championship, a league he is familiar with, which would be healthy for him at this stage in his development.

On the other hand, a transfer to Ibrox would hand the Northern Ireland international the opportunity to play in a European competition and the chance to fight for top-flight silverware.

The main advantage that the Scottish Premiership side have in this particular transfer battle, though, is the fact that former Wednesday boss Rohl is in charge of Rangers.

Rohl handed Charles 13 Owls appearances last season, including eight Championship outings, and the 20-year-old should be keen on reuniting with the German now that he is ready for more game time.

Moving to Ibrox would also see the 20-year-old link back up with his former Wednesday teammate Djeidi Gassama, which would further help him adapt to a fresh environment.

Rangers would also have Cardiff to thank if they can sign Charles, should the South Wales club opt for Trott's services instead.
