CD Castellón will end the week second, in the automatic promotion places, after Racing de Santander beat Las Palmas 4-1. Castellón had already beaten Leganés 2-0 on Friday in LaLiga Hypermotion.
Racing lead on 41 points, with Las Palmas third on 38. According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, this is Castellón’s highest position for many years and comes with a stable project under Haralabos Voulgaris.
Almería’s defeat to Deportivo ensured they did not overtake Castellón. Deportivo are fourth with 37 points and Almería fifth on 36, with Cádiz and Burgos also on 36 after Burgos beat Huesca.
Even so, the club and Pablo Hernández continue to stress the need to stay grounded despite the excellent run of form.
Castellón had not been in a comparable position since matchday seven of 1992/93, when they led on 11 points, level with Lleida and Racing de Santander. They later slipped to finish 10th.
Since then, this campaign is the closest they have come to a return to Primera, a division they have not played in since relegation in the summer of 1991.
