The Telegraph reports that Raheem Sterling, 31, is to appear in court on 15 September for dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for illegal inhalation, and refusing a breath test.

On 28 May, as his former England team-mates prepared for the World Cup, he was arrested by Hampshire police after his Lamborghini struck motorway safety barriers.

He was released on bail pending the investigation. The Daily Mail then published a video that showed him driving erratically moments before the crash.

In the footage, the former Liverpool and Manchester City forward, now at Feyenoord, weaves across three motorway lanes and moves perilously close to the central reservation.

Sterling won 82 England caps and scored 20 goals.
