In what marks the beginning of the official Rangers summer clearout, the club today confirmed the departures of Ianis Hagi, Leon Balogun, and Tom Lawrence upon the expiration of their contracts. The statement, released on Rangers’ official channels, signals the end of the road for three players who each had varying levels of impact during their time at Ibrox.
Hagi’s departure will raise the most eyebrows. Signed as a marquee talent, the Romanian had moments of brilliance but never fully cemented a long-term place in the starting XI following injury setbacks and inconsistency. Still, his technical ability and flair earned him a loyal fanbase, and his exit will be felt emotionally by a section of supporters. However, many had already accepted that his time in Govan was nearing its end.
Leon Balogun’s second spell comes to a close again, though many fans will feel the veteran defender deserved a proper send-off. He wasn’t the worst performer in the latter stages of the season and arguably steadied a rocky backline when called upon. Nonetheless, his departure suggests the club are ready to overhaul their defensive options once more.
Tom Lawrence, meanwhile, was seen as a potentially inspired free agent signing back in 2022, but injuries severely hampered his contributions. Despite flashes of quality, he could never sustain a run of form or fitness, and few will be surprised to see him on the list.
The post also confirmed the return of three loan players to their parent clubs: Václav Černý, Neraysho Kasanwirjo, and Rafael Fernandes. Černý impressed in glimpses, showing attacking intent and technical quality that hinted at potential for a longer stay, but ultimately the club have decided not to pursue a permanent deal. Kasanwirjo showed flashes of promise, especially in a couple of cameos, but didn’t do quite enough to secure his future. Rafael Fernandes barely featured and will go down as one of the more forgettable signings in recent memory.
This announcement is expected to be just the beginning. Rangers are preparing for a major overhaul after another disappointing season. The message from the club is clear—players who haven’t delivered consistently or who don’t fit into the future project are being moved on. Supporters will now be eagerly awaiting news of who comes in, as the Ibrox rebuild shifts into full gear.
