Rangers don’t need a sporting director – give Rohl control

Real Betis Sporting Director Manu Fajardo has rejected speculation linking him to the Rangers job, but Ibrox Noise ponders the following teaser:

Do Rangers actually need a Sporting Director?

It was Dave King who first advocated for one for Rangers, and Ibrox Noise did not support the idea.

That man ended up being Mark Allen, and the one good thing he did was to suggest a left-field appointment of Steven Gerrard as Rangers manager.

His successor was Ross Wilson and he wasn’t exactly outstanding either. Who could forget that dire 2022 window which gave us Ben Davies and Rabbi Matondo at high price?

Then it was blank for a while before Rangers bizarrely appointed Nils Koppen as Director of Football Recruitment. This was before inexplicably and unpopularly promoting him to ‘technical director’.

He left before the takeover finished.

Then of course Kevin Thelwell, approved by the 49ers came in. And he was arguably the most unpopular staff member at that level since the Ashley days, maybe even worse.

And look at the staggering dross he recruited.

We just prefer the days of Walter, McLeish and Advocaat, where the manager chose the players they wanted (with a little help from scouting) and dealt directly with them.

Forget suits from above who haven’t the first clue about management doing the recruiting and signing.

We didn’t like it back in the day and we still don’t like it.

Your head coach should be your manager – for better or worse, it should be his squad, his players, his vision.

He should not be ‘given’ a squad by some suit above him and made to make do with those scraps.

Managers should be judged on their players, not a Sporting Director’s slop purchases.

Given Danny Rohl free reign with budget this January and let him using the scouting network to bring in players he likes and he wants.

Then Rohl can be praised or criticised on the players he has chosen to acquire.

We really don’t need another wage like Kevin Thelwell again.
