Rangers are getting close to signing Southampton striker Cameron Archer ahead of the transfer deadline, according to talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook. Rangers are hoping to bring in an attacker to the Ibrox club before 7pm on Monday, and it appears the Bears are closing in on a move for the 24-year-old Englishman. Archer was not included in the Saints’ matchday squad that won 2-0 at Stoke City today, and work could be going on behind the scenes to get him to reunite with the Light Blues manager Danny Rohl.

Rangers could do with a new striker as the Bears look to challenge Hearts for the Scottish Premiership title. They have also been linked with Hansa Rostock striker Ryan Naderi, tabling around €3.6 million for the German, but his club do not want to sell him this window. However, Southampton are open to allowing Archer leave and are looking to bring in a striker between now and Monday. The former Aston Villa forward brings considerable experience to the table having impressed in the English Championship in recent seasons.

Archer can make all the difference for Rangers in the title race as he offers something different from their other striking options. He can drop deep to pick up the ball, feature as a number 10 due to his technical abilities and knack for playing through balls. Rohl knows him from their time together at Sheffield United and is convinced the Saints attacker can improve Rangers’ fortunes in the final third. There are less than 48 hours remaining in the winter transfer window, and Bears will need to sort things out as quickly as possible to get the deal for Archer across the line.

Signing him will allow Danilo to move on loan to NEC Nijmegen, and he will be desperate to hit the ground running at Ibrox and prove to be an upgrade on Bojan Miovski and Youssef Chermiti.
