Rangers fans definitely have a new target to attack now following Nasser Djiga’s mistimed leap which gifted Braga their equaliser. Nasser Djiga Rangers struggles are real.
The Burkina Faso international definitely hasn’t won fans over since his loan switch north, following Ibrox Noise’s high rating of him on his arrival.
One Ibrox Noise reader was keen to point out our positive assessment of the defender, and criticise that assessment based on Braga.
So we wanted to look back on last night and his Rangers and career in general.
Why has it just not worked for Djiga at Rangers?
There is a caveat here – it hasn’t worked for ANYONE who arrived this summer. All Thelwell’s additions have crashed and burned. Every last one.
But Djiga’s CV before Rangers reads:
Two Serbian Cups, two Serbian titles having made 56 appearances – a regular starter for all of these. 14 Champions League appearances – all starts, and a goal and an assist at that level.
Five Premier League appearances, one start.
Oh, and 11 caps for his country. One goal.
No one is going to tell us Nasser Djiga is a rotten player and can’t defend.
Even last night, 3 clearances, one blocked shot, and an excellent 5 recoveries. It was nowhere near horrible.
The error was dire though, so Rangers fans are now slamming him – it cost the hosts a potential victory.
So what’s going on here?
Well the reality is simple. He couldn’t partner with John Souttar – Ibrox Noise called that out early on, and Russell Martin stuck by it. It kept leaking goals. And Djiga got the blame.
Then some will say that Manny Fernandez isn’t John Souttar. Correct. He’s a defender League One Peterborough rejected.
No one is going to tell us Manny Fernandez is a top stopper. Their fans were laughing when they sold him for £5M.
But he’s another one that Djiga has no understanding with. Remember that goal for Livi right down the centre of the pair of them.
What does this all mean? Simply that Rangers don’t make good defensive partnerships any more.
The last ones involved Leon Balogun. He was a titan, a leader, and he helped the Basseys, the Goldsons next to him.
John Souttar is no leader, and Manny Fernandez sure as heck isn’t.
Danny Rohl is yet another Rangers manager to fail to bother with defence. They never bother with defence.
And so decent defenders signed by Wolves for £15M end up looking average.
This is not to excuse the error, it was exactly that – a poor error.
But we’re not going to join the hate crew who blame Djiga now as the worst thing since broken butter down toast. Nasser Djiga Rangers struggles.
He clearly doesn’t suit Rangers much, but then, none of the signings this summer have. Thelwell did a number on this club, and that includes inflicting Danny Rohl on us as well.
Que sera.
