Wolves are preparing for life back in the Championship after suffering relegation under Rob Edwards.

The 43-year-old took charge at Molineux in November, and he has been unable to turn things around in the months since.

The Midlands outfit are rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table, and will have their time in the division cut short after eight seasons.

Planning will already be underway for the upcoming transfer window, with their sights set on earning promotion straight back to the top flight.

Key players are also at risk of departing with the step down to the second tier, in what could become a total overhaul of the squad.

Edwards’ experience in a promotion battle could prove key, as he previously led Luton Town to the Premier League in 2023.

Wolves set for James Tavernier setback

It was reported earlier this week that Wolves are monitoring the situation regarding James Tavernier, with the full-back set to leave Rangers at the end of the season.

However, according to Football Insider, the 34-year-old will snub a move back to England this summer in favour of a switch to Saudi Arabia.

It’s believed that a move back to English football is unlikely, with the Rangers player seeking a fresh challenge in his career after 11 years at Ibrox.

Tavernier previously played for the likes of Wigan Athletic, Bristol City, Shrewsbury Town and Rotherham United before joining Rangers in 2015.

During his time with the Glasgow outfit, he won the Scottish Championship and Premiership, and earned experience competing in the Europa and Champions League.

Wolves were considering an approach for the defender, who will become a free agent in the summer, but are now set to miss out on the player.

Tavernier has been a key figure in Danny Rohl’s side this campaign, featuring 32 times in the league as they chase another title.

The right-back has contributed eight goals and four assists, with the team currently third in the table.

Meanwhile, Wolves are three points behind 19th place Burnley with just four Premier League games remaining.

The Old Gold have fixtures against Sunderland, Brighton, Fulham and the Clarets left to end this disappointing campaign on a high note before returning to the Championship.

Next up is a home game against the Black Cats on 2 May in a 3pm kick-off.

Other targets will emerge with James Tavernier snub

Missing out on the chance to sign Tavernier would be a setback for Wolves, but one they can quickly move on from.

It is still only April, and planning for potential transfer targets will still be in the relatively early phases, so this isn’t a disaster of any kind for the club.

While there’s no doubt he could’ve been an excellent addition to Edwards’ side, there’s ultimately not much they can do if he has no interest in a return to English football.

It will be a busy summer at Wolves, and this will just be the beginning of players being linked with a move to Molineux, as there will be plenty of alternative targets to emerge as the weeks and months go on.
