Rangers are the latest club to show an interest in Sheffield Wednesday's Djeidi Gassama.
Rangers are the latest club to show an interest in Sheffield Wednesday’s Djeidi Gassama, who faces an uncertain future at Hillsborough due to their off-field situation.
The winger joined PSG as a teenager, and he actually played once for the European champions, before he left for the Owls in 2023 in search of regular first-team football.
Since then, Gassama has been an important figure for Wednesday, and he was particularly impressive in the previous campaign under Danny Rohl as the Yorkshire outfit secured a mid-table finish.
The 21-year-old was a key outlet with his pace and dribbling ability, and he ended up scoring seven goals in 43 games.
That form, combined with Sheffield Wednesday’s financial worries, along with Gassama’s contract expiring in 12 months, means he is unsurprisingly attracting plenty of transfer interest.
It has been claimed that Blackburn are monitoring the player, and the Sheffield Star has revealed that Rangers are ‘very keen’ on bringing Gassama to Ibrox.
Whilst they say it’s unclear whether a formal bid will arrive, he is among the targets for Russell Martin as he looks to make his mark in Glasgow.
Journalist Alan Biggs has claimed there is a 'high chance' of this deal materialising with there no mention yet of the fee that the Scottish giants will pay the Owls for the winger.
The Scottish side start their season on July 22 against Panathinaikos in a Champions League qualifier, so they have been busy adding to their squad already this summer, and further additions will be planned before that huge test.
It’s a very difficult time for Wednesday fans right now, and it won’t be helped by news that they could lose one of their better players.
Even though Gassama is frustrating at times, which is to be expected for a youngster, he is the sort of player that you enjoy watching with his pace and direct style.
So, if he left, he would be missed, but you can see why clubs are trying to take advantage of the Owls’ situation, with the club under a transfer embargo after Chansiri once again failed to pay wages on time.
In the bigger picture, the only priority for Wednesday is for Chansiri to sell, as that will allow them to start fresh under a new owner.
For now, though, it’s about ensuring their financial obligations are met, and if Gassama’s sale can help that process, then you would expect something to happen swiftly if the interest is serious.
