Hearts kept Rangers at bay until the 24th minute, when Rachel McLauchlan thumped the ball past goalkeeper Charlotte Parker-Smith from 30 yards.

Brogan Hay and Kirsty Howat failed to find the target when well placed for Rangers, while Hearts had one first-half effort on target but Carly Girasoli’s header from a corner was straight at Victoria Esson.

Kathleen McGovern could only direct a first-time effort to the Rangers keeper, while Hearts’ custodian Parker-Smith saved at the feet of both Kirsty Maclean and Rio Hardy.

Rachel Rowe went round the Hearts keeper only to be thwarted by the tackle of Monica Forsyth, Parker-Smith then making a sharp save when a cut-back ricocheted off Rowe.

Esson struggled to keep out a powerful cross from Girasoli but with four minutes of the ninety remaining, Lizzie Arnot swept the ball into the bottom corner from 20 yards to seal victory for Rangers.
