As alluded to earlier, there is a little bit of speculation and indeed doubt about the status of Max Aarons’ contract with Rangers. We do know for sure that the Premier League star will indeed be coming on loan for around one season, we believe. However, what is a lot less clear is about obligation and option to buy. The initial breaking news from Sky Sports sources was that Aarons would not include an option to buy. This was trusted information and was disappointing because, of course, what is the point of bringing someone in on loan who then impresses only to leave at the end? We’ve seen that movie before many times—Sima and Cerny being two very big examples of this.
However, new information has come to light which may spell doubt and change the picture somewhat. Again from Sky Sports sources, the terms of the deal may in actual fact omit only an obligation to buy—that is, there will be no obligation. But there is no specification yet about whether or not there will be an option. The two are very distinct: one is optional, the other mandatory. One gives the loaning club the power to buy if they choose to, if the player impresses. The other is the farcical deals that cost Rangers around £9 million earlier this year and last—on Mohamed Diomande and Oscar Cortes, both obligations and both costing a lot of money, essentially a “£10 million down the drain” even if some fans disagree.
Nevertheless, Rangers may have learned from this and dumped obligations altogether—it’s now specified clearly that there will be no obligation to buy . Whether or not there will be an option to buy is now clouded in doubt—but there may actually be one. And we certainly hope whoever negotiated—be it Kevin Thelwell or someone else—had the nous to put such an option in there. Because if this player impresses, Rangers will want to keep him. So we’ll find out in due course if there is indeed an option to buy.
