Brazil winger Raphinha has sustained a muscle injury in the back of his right thigh and will follow an intensive treatment programme as he tries to remain at the World Cup. The Brazilian federation said scans in the United States confirmed the problem and that he will stay with the squad, with no timetable for return.

The Barcelona forward crouched down in the 40th minute of Brazil’s second group match against Haiti, then told Vinicius he could not continue. He left the pitch slowly without drama.

The right hamstring has troubled him all season, this is the fifth time it has gone. Those issues hit Barcelona throughout the campaign and have now carried into international duty.

Earlier this year he suffered a biceps femoris injury in a friendly against France that kept him out for a little over a month. He missed six games, including the Champions League quarter-final tie with Atlético.

His longest absence came after another biceps femoris problem sustained at Oviedo in September, which kept him out for two months and was followed by two setbacks. He later returned in November, suffered a late-January overload that cost him three more games, then another hamstring issue in March ruled him out for six further matches.

Even so, he finished the season with 21 goals and eight assists. He is now holding on to the hope of a swift recovery.
