Marcus Rashford was the standout figure in FC Barcelona’s 2-1 win over Newcastle United on Tuesday night.

The on-loan forward, on his return to England, started the match and scored twice, securing the Blaugrana’s victory in their first Champions League game of the season and earning the MVP award.

The night at St James’s Park was a special one for Rashford, who scored both his team’s goals after having made a rather slow start to life at Barcelona.

After the game, the 27-year-old expressed his joy at scoring his first official goals for the club.

“I only saw the second goal, but it was certainly a great game in a difficult stadium. We played very well,” he said, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo.

Talking in detail about his goals, Rashford explained: “For the header, I attacked the space a little earlier because I found that space in the Newcastle area and that’s where I attack. I focus on shooting downwards. Headers are more difficult for me.”

On the second strike, a rocket-strike from outside the box, the Barcelona star noted: “As for the second one, I’ve scored a few more. I hope to keep scoring a few more.

“The technique on the second one was very good, but it’s something I’ve worked on my whole life. It’s more about having confidence, shooting and daring to do it when you’re in front of goal. To score another one of these in a game is perfect.”

Rashford also emphasised that he is increasingly adapting to the team and to Hansi Flick’s playing style at Barcelona.

“We have a team with top players. It’s difficult to arrive in a new city, a new culture, but I’m enjoying it and I’m getting more and more comfortable. As time goes by, I’ll improve my football,” concluded Rashford.
