LaLiga confirmed the matchday 23 LaLiga EA Sports fixture between Rayo Vallecano and Real Oviedo will be played on Wednesday, four March at 19:00.

The decision ends days of uncertainty and negotiations after the game was called off hours before kick-off on 7 February because of the poor state of the Vallecas pitch, which was deemed a player-safety issue.

The suspension angered Real Oviedo, whose players, staff and many supporters had already travelled. The Asturian club explored formal complaints to the RFEF, including possible legal action and a request to be awarded the three points.

Figures within the game, including Santi Cazorla, also criticised the handling of the episode and compared the organisation of the competition with other European leagues.

Work continues to improve the Vallecas surface, with the aim of hosting Atletico Madrid at the stadium rather than moving to Butarque. The evolution of the pitch and LaLiga’s response on permission to play there will be closely watched in the coming days.

With the new date set, both sides will adjust schedules and preparations. The match arrives at a key stage of the season, with Rayo and Oviedo both fighting to avoid relegation to Segunda División.
