Sunderland face renewed competition for Lutsharel Geertruida after their option to buy expired, potentially exposing them to a Leeds United challenge this summer.
The RB Leipzig defender spent 2025/26 on loan at the Stadium of Light, with a clause worth just under £20m that has now lapsed. According to Sky Germany, Leipzig want a permanent sale and there is interest from the Premier League, Serie A and La Liga, with the upcoming World Cup a chance to raise his profile.
The same outlet adds Sunderland remain in the race following fresh talks. They are seeking a lower fee, which is why the option was allowed to expire, and no decision has been made.
TEAMtalk reports Leeds, Aston Villa, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace have monitored his situation, while clubs in Italy, Germany, France and Spain have also made enquiries.
Liverpool are said to have cooled on the defender. Voetbal International claims there is currently no contact with Anfield’s recruitment staff following the departure of head coach Arne Slot, who previously worked with Geertruida at Feyenoord.
