Real Betis have joined the chase for Sunderland striker Eliezer Mayenda, with a summer exit increasingly likely as he seeks regular senior football. Minutes currently look unlikely at the Stadium of Light given Brian Brobbey’s exceptional recent form.
Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Betis, managed by Manuel Pellegrini, have a longstanding interest and are now competing for his signature. The Andalusian club finished fifth in La Liga last season and will play in the Champions League league phase next season.
Ligue 1 side Stade Rennais have a strong interest in the 21-year-old. Portuguese media pushed back earlier this week on claims that FC Porto were close to agreeing a deal, though Sunderland are thought to be aware of interest from the Primeira Liga champions.
Sunderland are understood to respect Mayenda’s wishes and would consider a departure if the terms are right. With interest growing, they could make a major profit in cash and SCR terms on the initial fee paid to sign him from Sochaux in summer 2023, and it is understood performance clauses and a sell-on were included.
While a loan remains possible, Mayenda is thought to prefer a permanent move at this stage.
