As Real Madrid returned to training after the brief holiday break, all eyes were on the fitness of Dani Carvajal.
The Real Madrid captain has been out of action due to a knee injury suffered earlier in the season. He has already missed 17 games and is tipped to return at the end of January.
Carvajal’s absence has been damning for Real Madrid, who are also dealing with the injury of new signing Trent Alexander-Arnold, effectively leaving Xabi Alonso devoid of a proper right-back.
A recent report from Guillermo Rai has offered an update on Carvajal’s fitness, suggesting that the veteran defender is currently training individually.
This is not necessarily inspiring news, as it means Carvajal still has a long way to go before he is able to train with the team.
However, the report adds that Carvajal is ‘fighting’ to make himself available for the upcoming Spanish Super Cup.

Real Madrid are slated to kickstart their Super Cup campaign in early January, when they take on Atletico Madrid in the semifinal in Jeddah.
Provided they win, Los Blancos will take on the winners of the other semifinal between FC Barcelona and Athletic Club.
Carvajal’s desperation to play the Super Cup is hardly surprising, as this competition could make or break Xabi Alonso and his future at Real Madrid.
Despite ending the year with three consecutive wins in all competitions, Alonso’s job is far from safe and many expect the Super Cup to be the great decider.
Carvajal, having played a key role in rallying the team in favour of Alonso, wants to be available for this vital tournament, where Real Madrid will look to dominate Barcelona after last season’s drubbing.
