Real Madrid have confirmed the signing of Marc Cucurella on a six-year contract to 30 June 2032, hours before Spain’s World Cup opener against Cabo Verde. The club said in a statement that an agreement has been reached with Chelsea.

The fee has not been disclosed. It is put at 55 million euros plus up to five million in bonuses, and costs can only be spread over four years for salary-cap purposes.

Cucurella becomes the fifth addition of the summer after José Mourinho’s appointment, defenders Denzel Dumfries and Ibrahima Konaté, and Bernardo Silva. Only Silva is yet to be announced, with his deal agreed after his Manchester City contract expired.

Madrid paid 15 million to Benfica to free Mourinho, and Inter will receive 20 million for Dumfries’s clause. Konaté and Silva arrive as free agents with signing-on fees.

His arrival invites exits at left-back. Fran García and long-term absentee Ferland Mendy could depart, and Madrid are listening to offers for Álvaro Carreras, who joined from Benfica last summer for 50 million.

Cucurella and his family prioritised a return to Spain after five seasons with Brighton and Chelsea. Barcelona pursued their academy graduate and Diego Simeone liked him, but Madrid moved swiftly, with Chelsea and new head coach Xabi Alonso already aware of his plans.
