Going into the summer, it was expected that Real Madrid would look to sign a new central midfielder to finally replace Toni Kroos, who retired from football two years ago. However, things have been complicated in recent weeks, largely due to the fact that Enzo Fernandez, who is new head coach Jose Mourinho’s top target, has been priced out of a move to the Bernabeu.
This has forced Real Madrid to move in a different direction. The signing of a new midfielder is no longer as much of a priority as before, although that has not stepped the club’s sporting department from identifying new targets – with the latest coming from Paris Saint-Germain.
As per reports in France (via MD), Real Madrid are showing interest in Fabian Ruiz. The 30-year-old, who is currently with Spain at the 2026 World Cup, is a player that Bernabeu officials have been aware of for several years, but his uncertain contract situation has led to him becoming a more serious target.
Ruiz has less than a year remaining on his current PSG deal, and while talks have been ongoing regarding a possible two-year extension, nothing has been agreed as of yet. This has led to increased speculation regarding his future in Paris, and Real Madrid are one of the clubs prepared to strike, although they have been joined by Galatasaray and Juventus.
According to the reports, PSG would be willing to sell Ruiz this summer if he fails to sign a new contract, although they would only do so if they were to receive an offer in the region of €40-50m. For a top-level midfielder, that is a good price, and it is much less than the €140m that Chelsea wanted to sell Fernandez to Real Madrid.
Despite this, Ruiz’s profile is not the one that Real Madrid desperately need. A controller, similar to how Kroos played, is the type of player that is wanted, so it may be best for the club to save their money and pursue someone else.
