La Liga giants Real Madrid are exploring the possibility of signing Aymeric Laporte from Al-Nassr this January.

That’s according to The Athletic, who have on Thursday provided an insight into the latest developments behind the scenes in the Spanish capital.

The brass at the Santiago Bernabéu, it is understood, are giving increasing thought to dipping into the market for mid-season reinforcements at centre-half.

With David Alaba’s recovery coming along slower than hoped, and emergency central cover in Dani Carvajal ruled out for the season with an ACL tear, the situation at the heart of Carlo Ancelotti’s backline is quickly becoming a source of major concern.

In turn, as per a report from the reliable Mario Cortegana of The Athletic:

‘Madrid are looking to reinforce at centre-back, and the likelihood of them making a signing in this position in January has grown.’

A shortlist of targets has already been drawn up by the Bernabéu transfer team, featuring names such as Vitor Reis and Castello Lukeba.

Perhaps the most intriguing of all, though, is that of the aforementioned Aymeric Laporte.

Currently plying his trade alongside Real Madrid legend Cristiano Ronaldo at Saudi outfit Al-Nassr, stopper Laporte made clear with his performances at this summer’s European Championships that he still boasts the required quality to play at the very top level of the game.

The reigning La Liga champions, as a result, are ‘considering’ a winter proposal for his signature, albeit with no contact having been made as of yet.
