George Hemmings is the first teenager to start for Villa in the Champions League in well over 40 years and he's made a bright start here, poking one just wide of Sommer's post. 

He's been one of the benefactors of the mass summer exodus. 

Virgili replaced Christos Tzolis at Brugge with the Greek departing for Arsenal. 

He played against Villa 10 days ago and his successor does tonight. 

Wan-Bissaka will need to be his best to keep him quiet for 90 minutes.

A Champions League finalist with Inter just over a year ago, Yan Sommer is the last player you'd expect to make an error tonight. 

He makes a mess of distributing the ball from the box and ends up with it in his hands outside his area. 

There's no yellow for the Swiss stopper and, luckily for him, Buendía's free-kick goes straight at the wall. 

Over in Athens, Luka Jović has come closest for the hosts.

Villa might not have scored yet in the Premier League but they've struck in Europe inside 11 minutes and, fittingly, it's the skipper John McGinn!

It's an exquisite curled finish from the Scotsman, who passes the ball away from Yan Sommer and into the far corner. 

It was brilliant from Pau Torres in the build-up and the finish topped it. 

Dream start for Unai Emery!

Brugge winger Jan Virgili has gotten off to an exciting start. 

He had Wan-Bissaka bamboozled before Villa just cleared the ball way and then forced Suzuki into the first save of the match. 

New goalkeeeper Zion Suzuki has made a composed start too. 

He's the first Japanese keeper to play in the competition. 

Wan-Bissaka last played in the Champions League in December 2023, coming on in Manchester United's 1-0 home defeat to Bayern Munich. 

It was also United's last game in the competition. They return on Thursday and their former right-back does tonight. 

Not bad for a player who was relegated with West Ham less than four months ago. 

Emi Buendía is one of the few Villa regulars left last season and he's had their first effort here. 

The Argentine goes close too, just putting the ball wide of the post after nice build up play from Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Kick off in Bruges and Athens is fast approaching as we gear up for a big night of action across the continent.

The Swiss model has had its critics but it does bring us new and/or interesting clashes most seasons and this year will be no different. 

Emery has won a record five Europa Leagues - can he make a big splash again in the Champions League? He did make a semi-final with Villarreal in 2022...

Here's how Villa line up as they make their return to the Champions League... 

First up though is the early kick offs.

AEK Athens and LASK facing off in the Greek capital but the bigger story is Europa League champions Aston Villa's visit to Club Brugge. 

It's been a summer of serious upheaval for Unai Emery's squad and he will be looking to secure both a first win and first goal of the season in Belgium tonight. 

We will have teams news ahead of that one shortly. 

Borussia Dortmund - beaten finalists in 2024 - host Villarreal in a very yellow encounter while Troy Parrott and Real Betis will be looking to build on a famous win over Real on Friday when they take on Lille. 

Another of Mourinho's former sides, Porto, host Manchester City in what could be a thrilling clash. 

New City boss Enzo Maresca's final game as Pep Guardiola's assistant was the 2023 final win over Inter but he's now at the helm and will be looking to help the club kick on again in Europe. 

In the match of the night, José Mourinho takes charge of his first European game in his second stint with Real Madrid against the side, Inter, he left for the Spanish capital way back in 2010. 

In another neat twist, his final game in charge of Inter came at the Bernabéu - the scene of tonight's game - where he led the Nerazzurri to their third European title with a 2-0 win over Bayern Munich. 

One of his starters that day? Current Inter boss Cristian Chivu. 

Neither two-time defending champions PSG or last season's finalists Arsenal are in action until tomorrow night but the four other sides to make the final in the last four seasons all are.
