Real Madrid confirmed the medical diagnosis for Ferland Mendy. The French defender had to be substituted midway through the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 vs Manchester City at the Santiago Bernabu after feeling discomfort during the game.

Tests carried out by the club’s medical staff revealed that Mendy is suffering from a muscle injury to the biceps femoris of his right leg.

While the medical statement issued by Real Madrid does not provide a specific timeline for his return, reports previously suggested that he could be out for a week.

Mendy could be sidelined for longer

But, according to AS, there is a possibility that Mendy could be out of action until after the upcoming international break.

Mendy, thus, is already ruled out of tomorrow’s La Liga clash against Elche as well as the second leg of the Champions League Round of 16 against Manchester City next week.

At the same time, his availability for the Madrid derby against Atletico Madrid, on 22 March, is also highly doubtful.

It will be Los Blancos’ final game before the international break, meaning Mendy may have to wait until after that window to make his comeback.

Mendy started the match against Manchester City and delivered a solid defensive performance, successfully containing attackers such as Savinho and Antoine Semenyo.

However, his body eventually gave way, forcing coach Alvaro Arbeloa to replace him with Fran Garcia.

This performance came after the 30-year-old Frenchman put in a solid shift in the La Liga game against Celta Vigo, which was his first appearance under Arbeloa. He will be hoping to mount a quick recovery and return to action at the earliest possible.
