Real Madrid defender Marc Cucurella reveals truth about Barcelona’s interest: ‘My agent received a few calls, but…’ | OneFootball

Marc Cucurella has dismissed suggestions that Barcelona seriously tried to sign him this summer, while revealing that he even attempted to convince Rodri to choose Real Madrid before the midfielder eventually moved to Catalonia.

Cucurella joined Real Madrid during the summer and has become Jose Mourinho’s first-choice left-back ahead of Alvaro Carreras. 

His arrival followed months of speculation linking him with several clubs, including Barcelona.

However, the defender insists the reported Barça interest never developed into a genuine transfer pursuit.

Barcelona were linked with Cucurella as a potential option at left-back, particularly amid uncertainty over Alejandro Balde’s future.

Those reports suggested Barça were monitoring the Spanish international while assessing different possibilities in the market. 

Real Madrid ultimately secured his signature in a deal worth €55 million, with another €5 million available through add-ons.

Asked about the supposed Barcelona interest, Cucurella made clear that the contact never progressed beyond preliminary conversations involving his representative.

“No, no, no. My agent received a few calls, but it didn’t go any further than that.

“I don’t think that can be considered genuine interest,” he told COPE.

Cucurella tried to convince Rodri to join Madrid

Cucurella also revealed that his conversations with Rodri took on a different tone when the midfielder was deciding between Real Madrid and Barcelona.

The two Spaniards spoke while Rodri was weighing up his future, and Cucurella admitted that he tried to push his compatriot towards the Bernabeu.

Rodri ultimately chose Barcelona, where he has since formed a midfield partnership with Pedri. Cucurella joked about the consequences of that decision when explaining how their conversation unfolded.

“He said something like, ‘We’ll see.’ I’m happy for him, but I hope he doesn’t have too much success because that would mean the end of ours,” he concluded.
