Real Madrid left-back Ferland Mendy has turned down the club’s initial offer to renew his contract, claims a report from SPORT.

This decision comes despite a significant shift in Mendy’s status at the club over the past two years. Initially, Real Madrid was considering selling him, but now they want to extend his contract. However, Mendy believes the offer they presented is not good enough.

Mendy’s situation at Real Madrid has seen a dramatic change, largely due to the support from the team’s manager, Carlo Ancelotti.

Ancelotti has shown great faith in his abilities, which led to the club proposing a new contract. Despite this, Mendy has not agreed to the terms, feeling that the offer does not meet his expectations.

Negotiations are still on

Interestingly, Mendy has indicated that both he and the club are optimistic about eventually reaching an agreement that will satisfy both parties.

Mendy’s journey at Real Madrid has been quite a rollercoaster and his struggles date back a couple of seasons. The French player asked the club for a salary increase and even threatened to leave if his demands were not met.

The club refused his request and told him that if he wanted to leave, he needed to bring an offer that matched the €48 million they paid for him in 2019.

In his debut season, Mendy competed with Marcelo and ended up playing more games than the Brazilian, starting 25 matches compared to Marcelo’s 21.

From that point on, Mendy secured his spot as the primary left-back due to his strong defensive skills, a quality that Ancelotti appreciated and continued to utilize.

Request of a new contract in the past

By the end of the 2021-2022 season, Mendy requested a contract review with a pay increase, as he was among the lower-paid members of the squad.

His contract is set to expire in 2025, but the club turned down his request, suggesting he leave if he could secure a similar offer to what they initially paid to Lyon. However, such an offer never materialized.

As of today, Real Madrid find themselves with several options for the left-back position. Besides Mendy, they are considering signing Alphonso Davies. There is also Fran Garcia, who has attracted Premier League interest.

Additionally, there is the possibility of bringing back Miguel Gutierrez. While all these players may have stronger offensive skills compared to Mendy, none match his defensive capabilities.
