Real Madrid forward Rodrygo Goes has had a difficult season at the Bernabeu, and it has come to a premature end. The Brazilian is set to be ruled out for significant time after a knee injury was diagnosed in the aftermath of Los Blancos’ 1-0 defeat to Getafe on Monday night.

Rodrygo was returning from five games out of action with tendonitis, and came on after 55 minutes as Real Madrid sought an equaliser against Los Azulones. The Brazilian came as close as any of his teammates to doing so, but finished the match with pain in his knee. Following an initial examination in the dressing room, Rodrygo was sent home, and underwent further tests at Valdebebas on Tuesday.

Rodrygo ruled out of World Cup with cruciate ligament injury

The crushing news for Rodrygo is not just that he will be ruled out for the remaining three months of the club season with Real Madrid, but also the World Cup with Brazil. Marca say that his cruciate ligament has been affected, and he will need surgery to address the issue. The likelihood is that he will be out for at least six to seven months, although some cruciate ligament injuries can take up a year to recover from. The usual time scale is seven to nine months out, but Arancha Rodriguez of Cadena Cope says the belief is that he will be out of action for 10 months.

Rodrygo to miss World Cup with Brazil

Despite featuring sparingly this season, Rodrygo was in contention to go to the World Cup with Brazil this summer. It would have been his second appearance at the tournament, having played 180 minutes in five games as an impact substitute in 2022. He will likely be targeting a return in 2027 next season.

For the time being, it leaves only Vinicius Junior and Gonzalo Garcia as available forwards for Real Madrid, with Kylian Mbappe also suffering from knee problems.
