Real Madrid’s intent to sign a new defender next year is well known at this point, and multiple top profiles have made themselves available to Los Blancos as potential options.

Many are even set to be available as free agents in June.

Ibrahima Konate was the first player to be seen as Real Madrid’s priority in the department, and the interest then shifted slowly from the Frenchman and onto Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace.

Yesterday, word suddenly came out that Los Blancos have shockingly reached a verbal agreement with Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano over a summer transfer as a free agent.

The truth of the matter

As relayed in a recent update by BILD, there is no truth to the report that Real Madrid and Upamecano have reached an agreement of any form.

There is indeed contact between Real Madrid and Upamecano’s entourage over a move but the two parties are currently far from reaching an agreement.

Further, the player does not rule out renewing with Bayern Munich either and the possibility is very much on the table.

Negotiations are ongoing and the German club wants to sort out his future before the end of the year.

From the player’s side, there is no hurry or deadline to reach an agreement with any party.

His camp sees no problem in allowing the decision to spill over to the new year when he will also be formally allowed to speak with other interested clubs.

It remains to be seen how hard Los Blancos push for Upamecano’s integration, but it is safe to say that a duo of Dean Huijsen and Upamecano at the back will be rock-solid and ever-dependable.
