Real Madrid returned from Mestalla with all three points in the bag as they beat Valencia 2-0 on Sunday night, courtesy of goals from Alvaro Carreras and Kylian Mbappe.

The biggest talking point coming out from the game, though, is the situation surrounding Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal.

For the fourth time in a row, the 34-year-old club captain went through a game without playing a single minute, remaining as an unused substitute.

Despite his presence, manager Alvaro Arbeloa opted to start young David Jimenez at right-back against Los Che and opted to bring Trent Alexander-Arnold on as a substitute in his first match back after two months out with injury.

Carvajal angry

Given the situation, Carvajal has been left angry and p**sed off, reports Mario Cortegana of The Athletic.

The 34-year-old club captain was seen involved in a conversation with fitness trainer Antonio Pintus after the game, where he appeared upset and annoyed.

As previously reported, and corroborated by the aforementioned publication, there has been no explanation provided to Carvajal over his lack of minutes under Arbeloa.

While the manager came out and said that he did not want take any risk with Carvajal’s fitness after the game, sources at the club state that the captain has been fit and ready to play at least 60 minutes in a match for some time now.

Renewal in doubt

All this has now cast serious doubts over Carvajal’s contract renewal, with the report stating that the Real Madrid board is no longer sure about moving forward with an extension offer for the captain.

In some previous cases with veteran players such as Toni Kroos and Nacho Fernandez, Real Madrid gave them an option to decide whether they wished to continue at the club or leave.

But that was not done for Luka Modric last season and might end up being the case with Carvajal as well.

Moreover, sources close to the player himself are expressing doubts about his continuity considering how things have been going on in recent weeks.

If the club captain ends up leaving, Real Madrid will enter the market for a new right-back in the summer – a scenario that has already been discussed at the club.
