Real Madrid look set to miss out on their leading midfielder target for the second time during the summer transfer window. They were previously priced out of a move for Enzo Fernandez, and now, they are about to be passed over by Rodri.

For weeks, it has been taken for granted that Real Madrid would sign Rodri before the end of the transfer window. Florentino Perez had previously been against a move for the Manchester City and Spain midfielder, but he recently gave the green light, which gave the club even more optimism that they would get their man.

However, they now appear to have been pipped by Barcelona. The Catalan club have opened talks with Rodri’s representatives in the last 24 hours, and now, Fabrice Hawkins has reported that the player himself has made the decision to pursue a move to the Spotify Camp Nou – with Real Madrid having been notified of this.

What are Real Madrid’s next steps?

Rodri had previously preferred a move to Real Madrid, but in the end, the club has seemingly waited too long to make their move, and this has led to Barcelona nipping in. It is a crushing blow for Bernabeu bosses, especially as it was clear that a blockbuster signing was needed in midfield to solve their problems of the last two seasons.

There has been a lot of optimism within Real Madrid over the summer as a result of the transfer business that has been done. The likes of Marc Cucurella, Ibrahima Konate and Yan Diomande (who will join in the coming days) are excellent deals, but Rodri would have been the biggest signing of the lot, which is why it is such a crushing blow that they look set to miss out on him – and to their biggest rivals, no less.
