Real Madrid legend Marcelo could not resist taking a playful swipe at Barcelona during the launch of FC 27, using the Champions League to highlight the difference between the two clubs’ European records.

The former Brazilian full-back was among several football icons at Wednesday’s event, with Luis Figo and Javier Mascherano also in attendance.

The occasion was largely light-hearted, but Marcelo’s answer to one question quickly caught attention.

When the former Real Madrid player was asked how many Champions League titles he had won, he responded with a joke aimed at Barça.

“Do you know how many Champions League titles you’ve won?” they asked the former Real Madrid player, to which he replied, “The same as Barça.”

The remark was made in front of Figo, who famously represented both clubs during his playing career.

Marcelo’s Champions League record speaks for itself

During Marcelo’s hugely successful spell at Real Madrid, the Brazilian won the Champions League five times.

His first triumph came in 2014, before further victories followed in 2016, 2017 and 2018. He then added another European title in 2022 as Real Madrid defeated Liverpool in the final.

Those successes form part of Real Madrid’s remarkable history in Europe’s premier club competition.

Real Madrid and Barcelona’s European rivalry

Barcelona’s Champions League success has largely come during the modern era.

The Catalan club have lifted the trophy five times, meaning their overall tally matches the number Marcelo collected during his Real Madrid career.

After Real Madrid had dominated the early European Cup era, their dominance returned in the modern Champions League era, particularly under Zinedine Zidane.

Cristiano Ronaldo was central to the famous three consecutive victories between 2016 and 2018, with Marcelo playing an important role in those campaigns.

It is to be noted that there was no serious rivalry on display at the FC 27 event, but the Brazilian’s response was classic football banter.

With five Champions League medals from his Real Madrid career, Marcelo had the perfect statistic to turn the question into a Barcelona dig.
