Real Madrid legend open to returning as Mourinho’s assistant: ‘I am always available for Madrid’ | OneFootball

Jose Mourinho wants trusted voices around him as he begins his new Real Madrid chapter, and Pepe has not completely ruled out becoming part of that picture.

The Portuguese coach is looking for a figure who knows the club well and can act as a bridge between the coaching staff, dressing room and board.

Luka Modric is one name doing the rounds to return to the club once he announces his retirement, but it is not clear what role Real Madrid want to give him.

It would be a role similar in spirit to the one Zinedine Zidane once held during Mourinho’s first spell in Madrid.

Pepe had been considered as a possible option because of his history at Real Madrid, his leadership and his close relationship with Mourinho.

Although the option has cooled in recent weeks, Pepe left the door open to being available for Madrid.

As quoted by SPORT, he said: “When we talk about Madrid, I am always very grateful. You never know. If someone needs me, like today, to play and help people, I am always available for Madrid.”

Mourinho wants unity at Madrid

Pepe backed Mourinho’s return to the Spanish club and highlighted the importance of building togetherness at the club again.

He said: “The most important thing is that the club is united. It was an important moment to have that union between the club, the fans and the players.

“Mourinho is a fundamental piece for everyone to be on the same page and help Madrid to return. I’m sure he’s going to win titles again.”

Real Madrid have enough talent, but managing relationships inside such a demanding club is always vital.

Beyond what he does from a sporting perspective, Mourinho will be the best person to bring the competitive edge back to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Carvalho now looks more likely

As reported, while Pepe is no longer the leading option, Ricardo Carvalho is reportedly the main candidate for the role.

Carvalho has worked with Mourinho at Porto, Chelsea and Real Madrid, and he is currently part of Roberto Martinez’s Portugal staff.

Irrespective of who comes in, it is clear Mourinho wants figures who know and understand what it means to be at Madrid and hopes that the mentality rubs off on his players.

Pepe has left the door open to a return. It remains to be seen if Madrid move to bring him back.
