Kees Smit has been widely discussed as one of Real Madrid’s top transfer targets for the upcoming summer transfer window, and the club are said to be willing to splash some cash on his signing.

After all, they see him to be an outstanding talent and a recruitment for the long-term, especially given how he is one of the highest-rated young midfielders on the planet.

What makes matters simpler for Los Blancos is that the player dreams of playing for the club and would prioritise a move to Madrid over the other offers on his table.

A fee discrepancy

As of last week, word had it that AZ Alkmaar would be open to selling Smit for a sum of around €30 million and €35 million, and Real Madrid saw that fee to be extremely feasible.

Now, however, Fabrizio Romano brings to light that the previous estimate is off the mark by quite some distance and that signing the teenager will be a more pricey affair.

As relayed by the Italian journalist, even a sum of €40 million to €45 million will not be enough to secure Smit’s services next summer. It will require bigger money, possibly even over the €50 million mark.

What this means for Real Madrid is that they must virtually double their budget for the same player, and it remains to be seen how the news has been received by the Valdebebas.

While finances are usually not a hurdle or limiting factor for the Merengues, the fact that they are looking for at least two defenders and one midfielder in the same transfer window leaves them in a tricky spot.

After all, Romano has also confirmed that the club will focus on both departments in June.
