Real Madrid’s recent 2-1 win over Barcelona has put spotlight on the sheer flexibility of the squad, as coach Xabi Alonso has managed to win against Hansi Flick’s men despite having to play a few players out of position.
Alonso, who was always aware of Eduardo Camavinga’s versatility, had to notably deploy Federico Valverde at right-back as well, in light of Dani Carvajal and Trent Alexander-Arnold’s lack of fitness.
This is despite the fact that Valverde had made it clear earlier in the season that he does not enjoy operating as a right-back.
According to MARCA, Valverde may not return to midfield soon and could continue playing at right-back for some time.
The Uruguayan’s defensive discipline and tactical intelligence have made him a reliable option for Alonso, even if it comes at the cost of his attacking freedom.
Carvajal’s injury and Trent’s incomplete recovery are key reasons behind this decision.

Moreover, the returns of Jude Bellingham and Eduardo Camavinga from their respective knocks have further crowded the midfield, making it difficult for Valverde to reclaim his natural position in the centre of the park.
Under Alonso, Valverde has already shown his willingness to adapt and put the team first, a trait that has made him one of the coach’s most trusted players.
However, while the Uruguayan remains professional about the situation, even though it is true that the player would ideally like to operate in his preferred midfield role, where he can make late runs into the box and influence the attack more directly.
For now, though, with Real Madrid’s right-back options limited, it appears Valverde will have to continue sacrificing his comfort for the greater good of the team.
